MINNEAPOLIS - The 2012 Eleven Who Care award recipients were honored Wednesday night in Minneapolis. The Eleven Who Care program was created by KARE 11 in 1984 to recognize outstanding volunteers in the community and to inspire others in the community to get involved.
The event was at the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' auditorium at 625 4th Avenue South in Minneapolis and featured the inspiring stories of this year's honorees. The event was hosted by KARE 11's Julie Nelson and Diana Pierce.
The individuals recognized in 2012 are:
Andy Anderson (Apple Valley, Minn.)- A retired farmer who now shares his knowledge and expertise with the visitors to the Family Farm at the MN Zoo. A good ambassador for agriculture and the Zoo.
Jared Broghamer (Minnetrista, Minn.) - A skilled house captain with Rebuilding Together Twin Cities, combining his professional skills and expertise with his volunteer efforts.
Arnie Curiel (Oakdale, Minn.) - Key volunteer with the Shop with Cops program in St. Paul, where more than 200 youth will do holiday shopping with members of the St. Paul Police Department.
Ken Ellis & Mike Porcaro (Minneapolis) - Volunteers dedicated to the care and development of the Bonsai collection at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory.
Hanna, Karl & Adam Gaertner (Lake Elmo, Minn.)- After watching their cousin compete in the Special Olympics, these siblings wanted to get involved. They help with a variety of sports throughout the year.
Mary Johnson (Minneapolis) - Founder of From Death to Live, an organization dedicated to ending violence by facilitating healing and reconciliation between families of victims and perpetrators.
Maria Keller (Plymouth, Minn.) - Founded Red Indeed at the age of 8, with a goal of collecting a million books for kids in need before she turns 18. Now 11, she has already passed the halfway mark.
Ronda Oliver (Minnetonka, Minn.) - Founder of Reach and Restore, Inc., an organization that provides furniture and clothing to families in need in the western suburbs.
Marsha Ovitz (Minneapolis) - Founder of Breanna's Gift, bringing art, music and dance to patients at Children's Hospitals & Clinics and the Ronald McDonald House.
Carlos Stewart (St. Paul, Minn.) - Founder of the Regime Basketball Program, serving youth out of the Dayton's Bluff Community Center in St. Paul.
Vonnie Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.) - A 60-year volunteer with the American Red Cross, recruiting & training medical volunteers and responding to national and international disasters.
David Folkerds (New Hope, Minn.) - Thrivent Member Honoree - A volunteer through Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity who has logged over 800 hours volunteering.
The recognition event was attended by family and friends of the honorees. The stories of the honorees are also shared on KARE 11 and kare11.com throughout the year.
Nominations for the Eleven Who Care award are submitted by community members throughout the year. The nomination form can be found online at www.kare11.com/community. The Eleven Who Care honorees are selected by the Eleven Who Care Board of Governors. Members of the 2012 Board of Governors are:
