Local progressive group calls for action on DACA

Without a bipartisan fix, over 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who were brought illegally into the United States when they were children, better known as Dreamers, face deportation.

CHANHASSEN, MINN. - Shortly before 6:30 AM on Thursday, members of the group, Indivisible MN03, stood on the darkened overpass along Highway 5 in Chanhassen with a bold message for morning commuters rushing below - Pass the Dream Act.

Without a bipartisan fix, over 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who were brought illegally into the United States when they were children, better known as Dreamers, face deportation.

Using homemade signs with Christmas lights shaped into large letters, members of Indivisible MN03 hoped the message spread to constituents of Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District.

"We hope to spark curiosity, get people thinking. People have heard a lot about the DREAM act on the news. Maybe they don't know that it's popular. We want to encourage people to get engaged, get involved and call their representative," said Jena Martin, co-founder and co-chair of Indivisible MN 03.

According to a recent CBS News poll, nearly 9 in 10 Americans favor allowing Dreamers to remain in the US.

"I hope that [Dreamers] see that they are not alone," said Anita Smithson, a member of Indivisible MN03. "They're Minnesotans just like us. They work with us. They might serve us as nurses, as EMTs or in our military. And we want them to know that we are here for them. Many of them are afraid to come out and speak," said Smithson.

The group will light up the evening in Maple Grove on Thursday, as well. Commuters along 1-94 will be able to see the "Pass the Dream Act" message, starting at 5 PM.
