It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but also a potentially dangerous one for children.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - ‘Tis the season for holiday parties, ice skating and enjoying some time away from school and work.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year but also a potentially dangerous one for children.

Dr. Anupam Kharbanda, Chief of Critical Care at Children’s Minnesota, has some tips for keeping your kids safe and out of the emergency room this holiday season.

  • Wear helmets when skiing, snowboarding or sledding
  • Dress to prevent frostbite
  • Maintain proper supervision
  • Use extreme caution around water, and never walk on frozen lakes or ponds
  • Keep decorations and ornaments that are choking hazards out of reach
  • Ensure trees are secured and won't tip over
  • Keep poisonous plants like mistletoe and poinsettia away from kids and pets
