Healthy eating tips for travelers

Lifestyle coach shares tips to keep on track while traveling.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - We work hard all winter to get ready for our beach vacations - so let’s not blow all the extra effort by eating and drinking too much while we’re there!

Lifestyle coach Andy Churchill with Profile by Sanford stopped by the KARE 11 News at 4 to share his tips to keep us on track while traveling.

Pack Healthy Choices

• When you’re packing for the trip, don’t forget to throw in some bars, dried fruits, string cheese or nuts. If you’ve got an early morning flight, pack a little bag or box of dried cereal and ask for milk on the plane.

• Having some extra options will help curb cravings and help you steer clear of many of the fast food or high sugar options available at the airport.

• Also, be wary of “healthy options” like salads or veggies and dip that are easy to grab near your gate – in many cases they are high in sodium or fat.

• Don’t forget to bring your own water bottle to fill once you’re past security. Drinking water will help you feel full and will help keep you hydrated on the plane.

Eat Breakfast

• It’s true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – plus, it’s the easiest meal to make healthy. Choose fruits, greek yogurt and whole grain toast for a balanced meal.

• We talk with Profile members about never skipping breakfast, because it can set you up for a few pitfalls throughout the day.

• If your starving come lunchtime, you’re more likely to overeat or reach for a less healthy option.

• Plus, you may not have enough energy to enjoy all the activities you have planned.

Schedule Snacks

• All-inclusive resorts make it easy to mindlessly eat throughout the day.

• Scheduling the times you’ll be snacking can help you be thoughtful about what you’re eating and how much.

• When it is time for a mid-morning or afternoon snack, reach for fruit, nuts or a healthy smoothie.

Plan Indulgences

• Let’s be honest, it’s okay for your diet to take a vacation for a meal or two - after all, we’re supposed to be getting away from it all!

• So, if you really want to try out your resort awesome buffet - go for it! But stick to only filling one plate with the foods you love.

• Doing this will keep you from feeling deprived, but will also help you manage your portions and stick with your goals.

• And let’s not forget drinks - if you plan on having a drink or two, remember they can add a lot of empty calories, so you may want to balance out your drinks with a healthier meal.
