GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – It’s storm season and that means storm damage is always a possibility.

Robert Keena, an attorney with Hellmuth & Johnson, stopped by the KARE 11 News at 4 to share some tips with homeowners who file storm damage insurance claims.

Here’s what he recommends:

  • Make a claim with the insurance company in a timely fashion. This is a common mistake after hail damage if homeowners failing to take action quickly.
  • Get an inspection as soon as possible. Do not rely on a storm-chasing repair company who knocks on doors.
  • Minnesota has a law where homeowners have the right to a third-party inspector to ensure the insurance company is paying a fair amount.
  • Minnesota also has a law that addresses the issue of materials that must be used when only a portion of a building has been damaged to ensure it matches and is appropriate. It’s called “the matching case.”
