Health directives: Making informed end-of-life decisions

It’s a topic many people may be hesitant to discuss.  But most say it’s an important one. How do you share your end-of-life care wishes with loved ones?

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - It’s a topic many people may be hesitant to discuss. But most say it’s an important one. How do you share your end-of-life care wishes with loved ones?

It starts with what is called a ‘directive.’ According to a recent Minnesota Department of Health Survey, only 32 percent of Minnesota adults have completed a health care directive. Of those who have not written one, the number one reason was “I haven’t gotten around to it.”

To help you get this important conversation started, KARE 11 is teaming up with The Convenings Project – a joint effort of Honoring Choices Minnesota and the Bruce Kramer Collaborative. Over the next several weeks, on air and online, KARE 11 will be featuring very personal stories to help you better understand the importance of advance-care planning.

You can learn more about creating an advanced care directive you can go to the Honoring Choices website. They are free, and available in five languages.
