Grow with KARE: Getting the best from your orchid

New science is giving us the best tips of taking care of your orchids

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - In nature, orchids grow in trees in the rainforest. Replicating that environment in your home in part means not over-mothering it!

While somewhat debated, science now tells us that laying an ice cube in the pot is a good way to give your orchid water. Provide good drainage and don't allow the plant to sit in water. Under a tree canopy, they avoid direct light so indirect light is best in your home. Avoid sunny windows.

And now research is changing how we care for orchids that we want to re-bloom. Whereas before the recommendation was to trim the stem to the first or second node after blooming. Now it seems best to cut the stem all the way to the bottom. Then give it some time. Orchids only bloom about once a year, so be a little patient!

In the mean time, check out the Spring flower show at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. It's a fabulous treat as we wait for Minnesota Spring to arrive.
