Caribbean travel plans? What to consider

Post-hurricane travel plans in the Caribbean? How can you be sure that wherever you want to go is doing OK?

The Caribbean: A dream destination during our snowy winter months.

But some of these beautiful islands are still cleaning up after one of the most destructive hurricane seasons ever.

"I would avoid some destinations that were hardest hit by the hurricanes," said Mark Albert, editor-in-chief of The Voyage Report, an independent resource for travel information.

Albert says you might want to avoid Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, St. Martin and St. Bart's for now.

But how can you be sure that wherever you want to go is doing OK?

"I really think you have to do your own fact-checking," he said. "So, don't just call the hotel or the resort where you're booked to ask them if they've recovered, but you want to find out about the total experience at your destination."

Like tourist attractions. Find out if they're still open and vibrant. Wait, how do you do that on your own?

"Consider, for example, calling the local government, the local Chamber of Commerce," he said. "And, I would also try to see if you can go on social media and find pictures taken recently from those destinations."

You can also look up travel review sites like Booking, Priceline, or Expedia and read the comments.

Also, some islands - like Puerto Rico - have set up a recovery site to tell you how much electricity and cell service is back.

And, no matter where you go - keep a paper trail.

"Keep records of everything," he said. "Keep records of any email discussion that you had with people down at your site or at the destination that you booked. Make sure you keep air and travel, car rental receipts."

Because if you don't get the services you were promised, you might be able to get reimbursed through travel insurance. You need proof, though.
