MINNEAPOLIS - Authorities say a bicyclist was struck and killed by a light rail train on Tuesday night.

Metro Transit spokesperson Howie Padilla says at about 6:45 p.m., they received a report of a northbound Blue Line train that struck a bicyclist. The crash happened at 42nd Street and Hiawatha.

Padilla said the male bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. He said it appears that the crossing arms were down and the bells were going off at the time of the collision.

Padilla said he does not know why the bicyclist was crossing at that time, but he wants to remind the public to slow down.

"It's a message we often say," Padilla said. "People's lives are worth more than a few minutes. If those lights and bells are going off we want people to understand that there is a train coming."
