MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis police say the boy who died after being hit by a car Friday night was 3 years old.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of 17th Avenue South. The boy was riding in a van, which police say pulled up next to the curb to drop him off.

Police say the boy got out of the van, walked behind it, and then started walking into the street. That's when witnesses say he was hit by a passing car.

Witnesses jumped in to render aid. Police and EMS arrived a short time later and rushed the boy to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Police say the boy died on the way there.

The man who hit the boy stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.
