Burnsville student tased, video goes viral

Police say say a school resource officer spent several minutes trying to de-escalate the situation before another responding officer ultimately tased the teen.

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Burnsville police say an officer tased the 14-year-old after he and another student got into an altercation.

They say a school resource officer spent several minutes trying to de-escalate the situation before he called in a patrol officer to help.

Police say that responding officer tased the teen once he got to the school.

The boy’s mother feels the incident should have ended differently. It's why she decided to share the video on Facebook.

As of late Friday night the video had been shared more than 5,000 times.

The Facebook post also attracted hundreds of comments from community members both condemning and condoning the way police handled the incident.

“I don’t feel like taser to the chest was the right method. Who wouldn’t be upset about that. You send your kid to school thinking they were going to be safe all day long, we all feel that way,” said Ivelesse Santiago, mother of teen tased by police.

A second video of the incident was also shared on Facebook.

Burnsville Police say this second video shows more of what happened before their officer deployed his taser.

Police say the resource officer captured the entire incident on his body camera, but police say they won't release that video until their investigation is complete.

The Burnsville School District sent out a statement Friday evening that acknowledged the incident.

The statement also explains how district officials feel the correct policies and procedures were followed on their end.

Santiago says police have offered to meet with her in person to go over the incident. She plans to meet with them and the school district in the coming days to hear why they thought a taser was necessary.
