MANKATO, Minn. - Former Minnesota Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson was sentenced Monday to two days in jail and no probation, for his role in an altercation last May that left a man with severe brain injuries.

Nelson already served his jail time but will have to serve 100 hours of community service. He will also pay a $300 fine.

Nelson pleaded guilty to one count of fifth-degree misdemeanor assault on Jan. 21, in a plea deal where two more serious charges were dropped.

Surveillance video of the brawl, which took place last spring outside a Mankato bar, shows Kolstad attacking Nelson and sucker-punching him, knocking Nelson to the ground. The tape then shows another man jumping in and repeatedly striking Kolstad, causing him to fall and hit his head on the cement sidewalk. Nelson then appears to kick Kolstad in the head.

Kolstad, a former Minnesota State University at Mankato football player, was left with severe brain trauma, and a long road to recovery.

Kolstad and his family were at Nelson's sentencing hearing Monday.
