MINNEAPOLIS - The passenger killed in a car crash in northeast Minneapolis early Sunday morning has been identified as a St. Thomas student.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 20-year-old Ria Patel. The University of St. Thomas posted on its website saying aarti (prayers) will be held for Patel, a junior at the school, on Monday at 7 p.m. at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir temple in Brooklyn Center.

Minneapolis police are searching for the man who was driving the car Patel was riding in when they crashed.

A memorial left at the site of the crash honored Ria Patel.

Authorities say the crash happened at an intersection in northeast Minneapolis just before 4 a.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found a car that had hit a stoplight. Patel was trapped inside. Officers freed her from the car and gave first aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness said the man driving the car ran away before police arrived. Officers used police dogs to search the area but could not find the suspect.
