'Extreme Horse Skijoring' at Canterbury Park

Skiers were pulled behind horses at speeds up to 40 miles per hour at Canterbury Park on Saturday.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - It may not be an Olympic sport yet, but it sure is extreme enough to be.

Skiers were pulled behind horses at speeds up to 40 miles per hour for an Extreme Horse Skijoring event at Canterbury Park on Saturday.

Practice runs started at 9 a.m., and the competition began at 1 p.m. and ran for two hours. There were 90 competitors from multiple states, including Alaska.

The skiers - and horses - had to maneuver through gates and over jumps on the Canterbury racetrack. They also had to grab rings as they went, a challenge the competitors said was the hardest part.

Some of the athletes participated in a freestyle competition later in the day.
