GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – The holiday season is the busiest time of the year for fire fighters.

"There are always lots of calls," says St. Paul fire investigator Jamie Novak. "We have the most fire deaths each year between Christmas and New Year's."

During the last year's holiday season, the State Fire Marshal reported 186 structure fires and three deaths.

Novak recommends the following:

Use flameless LED candles rather than wick-burning.

Keep candles away from combustibles.

Set a timer to remind you to blow them out.

Keep a 3-foot buffer around wood-burning fire place

Keep fireplace windows or screen closed.

Avoid overloading electrical outlets.

Keep the Christmas tree watered

Purchase a stove top fire suppresser

Check smoke detectors around the holiday season
