INDEPENDENCE, Minn. - A grass fire near burning near Independence City Hall has been extinguished.

The West Hennepin Public Safety Facebook page says first responders were dispatched on reports of a grass fire near the intersection of Highway 12 and County Road 90 around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Crews found the wildfire burning in the middle of a swamp just east of the Independence City Hall, an area of about 100 feet by 100 feet but growing quickly. It ultimately ended up blackening an estimated 50 acres.

Although the fire was burning in a swampy area and did not threaten any buildings, safety officials chose to briefly close Highway 12 between County Road 90 and County Road 83 while firefighters battled the flames.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's office reports the fire was fully extinguished around 3 a.m. Monday.

Fire crews will stay in place to make sure the fire does not spread.
