GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - We are headed into the heart of sunscreen season.

Even though we should be wearing SPF all year long, it's most important during the summer months.

"Your risk is much greater in the summer, remember it doesn't have to do with heat, it has to do with how high the sun is in the sky," explains Dermatologist Caleb Creswell, MD.

A Consumer Reports study out this month rated 23 sunscreen products in their ability to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Topping the list and labeled as recommended:

  • Banana Boat Ultra Defense Max Skin Protect
  • Bull Frog Water Armor Sport Instacool
  • Neutrogena Ultimate Sport
  • Well at Walgreens Sport
  • Coppertone Water Babies

Listed as recommended and given a best-buy designation:

  • Target's Up and Up
  • Walmart's Equate Ultra Protection

The lowest rated products included:

  • Banana Boat Kids
  • Beyond Coastal Natural
  • Up & Up Kids
  • Alba Botanic Very Emollient Sport
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist

"Any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen," adds Creswell.

Overall, he says the best sunscreen is the one you are willing to wear everyday.

"If you try one and it feels good on your face and it's an SPF 30 and it has broad spectrum coverage, than that's the sunscreen for you."
