ST. PAUL, Minn. - An overnight house fire Thursday has claimed the life of a woman on St. Paul's east side.

Fire crews were dispatched to the 1800 block of LaCrosse Avenue around 1:45 a.m. after a neighbor was awakened by his barking dog and noticed a nearby home was on fire. Upon arrival firefighters saw flames leaping from the windows on two sides of the structure.

During their attack on the flames firefighters found the body of a resident who was unconscious and not breathing. Lifesaving efforts began immediately but the female victim was transported to Regions Hospital in full cardiac arrest. After 30 minutes of continuous CPR the elderly victim was pronounced dead.

One firefighter was hospitalized briefly after suffering minor burns. The department says he was treated and released.

At this point the cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation.
