Southwest Airlines' three-day sale has travelers around the nation searching for deals, but if you're flying out of Minneapolis, you can count the special sale price routes on one hand.

You can fly from MSP to three cities – Kansas City, Milwaukee or St. Louis – starting at just $49 one-way. For $79, you can fly one-way to Atlanta or Baltimore.

Keep in mind, there are several restrictions. You have to travel between Aug. 22 and Dec. 13, it doesn't apply to trips on Labor Day or Thanksgiving weekend, and you won't find those cheap fares on Fridays and Sundays.

If you still find a deal that works for you, travel experts say book first, plan later. The U.S. Department of Transportation gives travelers 24-hour protection on flight bookings, which serves as a grace period if you change your mind.

"You have 24 hours to check with your spouse, your kids, your boss, your babysitter, your grandparents, whomever; to see if the deal works for you," said Mark Albert, Editor-in-Chief of The Voyage Report. "If not, you can cancel and get your money back within 24 hours."

Albert says if you don't find a flight that works for you, it's still a good idea to pay attention to other airlines this week. Price competition is always fierce and with all the attention on Southwest, others will be looking to capitalize as well.

"So if this is not the exact route or price for you, you should still keep checking through the next 48 hours," Albert said. "Your favorite airline, to your favorite destination may put that route on sale. Just keep checking. You never know."
