OWATONNA, Minn. - Steele County investigators are trying to determine the circumstances behind a body found in a burned-vehicle just west of Owatonna Sunday.

Chief Deputy Scott Hanson says deputies and fire crews responded to reports of a vehicle burning in a farm field on Northwest 52nd Avenue just after 6:30 p.m. When they arrived they extinguished the fire and found the body of an unidentified man inside.

The vehicle was a total loss, meaning that evidence is hard to come by.

An autopsy on the victim is being performed by the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office-Mayo Clinic. The Steele County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshall are investigating the case.
