NORTHWOOD, Iowa - An entire town near the Iowa-Minnesota border is being evacuated Thursday morning due to a fire that contains sulfuric acid burning at the municipal airport.

Officials with Worth County Emergency Management called the situation dangerous and asked all residents to leave immediately. Highway 65 is closed in both direction between County Road A34 and the Minnesota border.

Northwood has a population of just more than 1,900 people, according to the 2012 Census.

Residents should go to the Kensett Community Center, about six miles south of Northwood on Highway 65, officials said.

Anyone who doesn't have transportation can go to the sheriff's office, 1000 Central Ave., for a ride. Residents can also call (641) 324-2481 if they can't make it to the sheriff's office on their own.
