MINNEAPOLIS — If you're looking for some easy, budget-friendly spring and summer fun, planning a picnic is a great option. But where should you go?

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources lists dozens of state parks and trails that are perfect for a picnic from the Twin Cities to the state border.

Whether you're planning a day jam-packed with activities, or just looking to relax outdoors, here are a few of the best places to enjoy a picnic:

Metro

Afton State Park

Between hiking, biking, fishing, and swimming, you're bound to work up an appetite after a day at Afton State Park. Set up a picnic right on the beach or at one of the designated picnic areas.

Fort Snelling State Park

According to Minnesota DNR, Fort Snelling State Park is a great place to enjoy a picnic by the water. You can rent fishing gear from the park office and enjoy some time on the lake before setting up at a nearby picnic area.

Gateway State Trail

Strap on your helmet! For 18 miles, you can pedal your way from St. Paul to I-694. The trail weaves through multiple parks. So when you're ready for a break, it won't be hard to find a spot to pull over and enjoy lunch.

Frontenac State Park

Come for a day or stay for the night. Frontenac State Park offers visitors hiking trails that overlook Lake Pepin and lead you to the shores of the Mississippi River. 

Nerstrand State Park

Come fall, Nerstrand State Park is a great place to take in the colors of the season, according to the Minnesota DNR. From the wildflowers to the waterfalls, the park is picture-perfect backdrop for a picnic.

Interstate State Park

There's plenty to see on your visit to Interstate State Park. Explore potholes along the river gorge, scout out different wildflowers, or spend your day on the water.

Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park

Take a trip back in time on a historic Forestville Tour. With tour options for all ages and abilities, there's no shortage of things to see around the park. 

Paul Bunyan State Trail

Whether you're hiking, biking, or snowmobiling across the longest Minnesota state trail and the longest continuously paved rail-trail in the country, Paul Bunyan State Trail will no doubt be a scenic trip. Multiple state parks are located along the trail, so you can pull over and pull out your picnic basket.

Blue Mounds State Park

Food with a view! Take in the scenery at Blue Mounds State Park or join a bison tour. Camping, hiking, and rock climbing are all available at the park.

Whitewater State Park

Hike, swim, eat, repeat! Celebrate the park's 100th birthday with a trip to Altura, Minnesota. Pull over during your scenic hike to lay out a blanket, rest your legs, and enjoy the view.

Lake Bemidji State Park

If you enjoy getting out in the cold, Minnesota DNR recommends visiting Lake Bemidji. Rent a pair of snowshoes, go for a hike, and then warm up with an indoor picnic by a warm fire.
