CHASKA, Minn. - A snowmobiler is dead after crashing his sled in Chaska Tuesday.

Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight says the victim left his home near Carver and headed to work on his snowmobile.

A short time later, Knight says the man called his roomate and said he needed help, but offered no other information.

Law enforcement and search crews began tracing the man's probable route and looking for him. Eventually a Chaska Police Officer spotted exhaust from the still-running snowmobile near Winkel Park, located on the Minnesota River in downtown Chaska.

Early information suggests the man was not riding on a groomed snowmobile trail and apparently ran into a tree, a fallen tree or another obstruction. When emergency crews found him, the man was on the onset of hypothermia and in a semiconscious state, Knight said.

Crews rushed him to the Two Twelve Medical Center before he was transferred to the Hennepin County Medical Center. The man passed away before noon.

Chief Knight says he can't remember the last snowmobile-related fatality in Chaska.
