BIG LAKE, Minn. - A stalled train has made life more challenging for commuters by canceling two scheduled runs on the North Star commuter line.

Metro Transit now says 5 of 6 morning routes (4 going into the Twin Cities, and one coming out) were cancelled, and the one that did run was delayed. because the disabled freight train was blocking tracks just south of Big Lake.

Buses were brought in to carry passengers who usually use the Northstar. Northstar Link buses transported passengers that use stations in Big Lake, Elk River and Ramsey, while Metro Transit buses carried those who board in Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley.

Metro Transit passengers weren't the only ones impacted: Amtrak's Empire Builder route to Chicago was set to leave St. Paul at 7:55 p.m. but was delayed four hours, and won't reach the Windy City until 8 p.m.
