Man arrested after wild chase in east metro

MnDOT cameras captured the chase, crash, and the driver running from the vehicle.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - A man is in police custody after leading police on a wild chase through the east metro Wednesday afternoon.

St. Paul Police Seargent Michael Ernster says it all began in the area of McKnight and Conway around 12:15 p.m. He says officers went to stop a vehicle occupied by a man wanted in an aggravated assault involving a firearm. Police believe the suspect was in possession of the gun at the time of the stop. The driver then took off.

He led police through the east side and up to Maplewood where it went east into North St Paul and Oakdale before coming south on Interstate 694 and back west on Interstate 94 into St Paul.

The chase then went north on Interstate 35E from I-94. The driver then exited at Maryland and crashed. MnDOT cameras captured the chase, crash, and the driver running from the vehicle. He was arrested in the 300-block of Maryland a short time later.

Officers found a handgun in the vehicle.

The 29-year-old man was booked for aggravated assault, fleeing police, possession of a firearm by an ineligible individual, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a controlled substance.

No one was injured during the chase.
