MINNEAPOLIS -- Minneapolis Police say a man was seriously injured when he was struck by a train on Nicollet Island.

Police say the incident happened just after midnight near the 200 block of Island Avenue next to the football field behind DeLaSalle High School.

According to authorities, two men were near the tracks at the time of the incident. One man was hit and suffered severe damage to his legs. His friend called police and the victim was taken to HCMC.

A spokesperson for the Minneapolis Police Department says first responders applied tourniquets to both of the victim's legs, likely saving the man's life.

Officials say they are not pressing charges, but will send information to BNSF Railways law enforcement.
