MINNEAPOLIS - Sometimes you have to knock something down to build it back up.
That's the case at Minnehaha Academy, where crews will soon begin demolition on the upper campus structures significantly damaged by last summer's powerful natural gas explosion.
A spokesperson says crews will be working to remove debris from the site beginning Tuesday, Dec. 5, and when that phase is done the parts of the Upper Campus that were destroyed or damaged beyond repair will be pulled down by heavy equipment.
Prior to demolition work was done to stabilize the athletic and arts wings of the school, which will remain standing. They were not originally designed as stand-alone buildings, and needed to be reinforced so the heavily-damaged central portion of the building that connected them can be removed.
Minnehaha Academy was rocked Aug. 2 when a crew working on relocating gas mains triggered a leak that ignited, setting off a huge explosion. Two people inside the upper campus building were killed in the blast.
