Three Rivers Park District is hosting the first ever Minnesota Nordic Ski Opener.

The event is on December 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove.

It will feature free skiing, free rentals, free ski tours, free mini-lessons as well as a fun kid’s activity area.

Local ski experts will also conduct seminars. The first 1,000 visitors will receive a free buff.

Participants can also check out roller ski demonstrations, snow grooming equipment shows and the latest gear by top manufacturers and retailers. Event organizer, Karl Huemiller, appeared on KARE 11 to extend a public invite. Huemiller says if it doesn’t snow for the Nordic Ski opener, the white stuff will be provided.

Lt. Governor Tina Smith, a Nordic skier herself, will read the governor's proclamation that December 9, 2017 is “Minnesota Nordic Ski Opener Day”.
