ST. PAUL, Minn. - The mathematical constant Pi is commonly referred to as 3.14. But an Edina teen proved there's much more to the equation.

On Monday, as part of the Minnesota State High School Math League State Tournament in St. Paul, 17-year-old Kenrick Bjelland recited 509 digits of Pi, in honor of National Pi Day.

When asked how he does it, Bjelland replied, "I try to memorize them in three groups of three, or groups of nine, sometimes there are nice patterns -- what I know ends in 83367336 -- so I just kind of rely on that and hope."
