ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota State Senator Karin Housley (R-St. Marys Point) says she'll run to be the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Al Franken.

Housley has represented Senate District 39 in the Minnesota Senate since 2012. She currently chairs the Senate Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care.

Housley, a native of South St. Paul, has owned and operated a real estate business for the last 15 years. Her husband, Minnesota hockey great Phil Housley, is currently the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres.

Earlier this month, Sen. Al Franken announced he was resigning due to sexual misconduct allegations. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to fill the seat, which is up for election in 2018.
