Target, Shipt bring same-day delivery to Twin Cities

Same-day delivery will be offered for groceries, essentials, home, electronics and other products.

MINNEAPOLIS - Good news for those wanting same-day Target essentials without leaving their home.

The company announced on Monday they will offer guests in the Twin Cities same-day delivery on groceries, essentials, home and more through the delivery company Shipt, starting on March 1.

Shipt’s Founder and CEO, Bill Smith explained it this way, “Shipt is an online grocery market place where you can purchase items and get them delivered to your kitchen in as fast as an hour.”

Target acquired Shipt for $550 million, giving them the opportunity to launch same-day delivery in about half its stores beginning early this year. The Twin Cities is the 47th market to have Shipt services by Target.

“Partnering with Target was huge for Shipt.” Explained Smith.

The company says by this year's holiday season, a majority of Target stores in major markets will have the same-day option. The same-day delivery service requires an annual membership of $99, similarly to Amazon. However, Target is offering customers new to Shipt and who sign up before March 1, a discounted annual membership for $49.

Same-day delivery will initially be offered for groceries, essentials, home, electronics, toys and other products from customers' local Target store. “It can be as fast as up to an hour later, you will receive your goods.”

Explained John Mulligan, Target’s Chief Operating Officer.

By the end of 2019, Target officials say all major product categories will be available for same-day shipping.

“We will add about 4,000 shoppers.” Said Mulligan.

Here's how it works: Customers place orders online for fresh food and household essentials and select same-day delivery at the checkout. Target's fleet of shoppers will then pick up the items and deliver them to customers' doorsteps within the same day.

Shipt is based in Birmingham, Alabama and San Francisco. The company plans to hire 4,000 shoppers in the Twin Cities area to help fulfill Target same-day orders. If you want to apply for an opening, click here.
