Thousands celebrate New Year's Eve despite -25 wind chill

Thousands of people in the Twin Cities are leaving the house and celebrating New Year's Eve despite wind chills that feel like -25 degrees.

MINNEAPOLIS - Thousands of partiers are heading out on the town for New Year's Eve in the Twin Cities despite double-digits below zero and a wind chill that feels like -25.

Managers of downtown hotspots like Seven have been watching the forecast and planning accordingly.

"We've been watching it for a while and it seems like as the week progressed, the temperatures dropped," said general manager Steve Uhl.

Seven has heaters at the doors and are using three entrances instead of one to cut down on lines.

"Just to get people off the street, get them in the building, keep them safe. Let them have some fun tonight," Uhl said.

Then on the rooftop, a tent that they've been heating up for the past three days.

"We should have a thousand to 1500 people in the building tonight," Uhl said.

Earlier in the day, people gathered at family-friendly New Year's Eve celebrations like the Maple Grove Community Center, which featured skating, swimming and bouncing on inflatables, as well as a late-afternoon balloon drop.

Those families were happy to get out of the house and let their kids burn off energy after being cooped up in the house during the cold snap.

"It's Minnesota, you know? It's what we get here, but you know, it didn't stop us from getting out and having fun, having a good time," said Brian Stein.
