MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota's child care center is postponing its closure after a slew of protests.
Last month, families were notified that the popular 45-year-old daycare center, the Child Development Center, would close in the summer of 2019 due to budgeting issues.
Immediately, parents, professors, and students began to protest.
In a letter sent out Saturday, University President Eric Kaler said, "I have heard your concerns about the proposed closing of the Child Development Center" and said they will keep the center open for "as long as needed to develop alternatives."
"I know this decision has caused stress to families," Kaler wrote. "I apologize for that."
Kaler said he wants to be clear that the postponement is not permanent. The university has said the decision was made to make room to expand another early childhood education program.
