ST. PAUL, Minn. - Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle made it official announcing their engagement Monday. Prince Harry will marry his fiancé next spring.
Why is it so many people are infatuated with royalty? Kevin Sauter, Professor of Communications and Journalism at the University of St. Thomas, said the movements of the monarchy are like a real-time soap opera Americans can't ignore.
“One is we don't have royalty in America, there is this notion of this curiosity across the pond. Young people are brought up with these notions. Whether it be in fairy tales or television programs, about meeting your prince and being swept away,” he said. “There's an envy there because we don't do things at the same scale.”
Sauter says the interested in the latest royal couple is heightened because of the American connection.
“People are intrigued because one of ours is joining the royal family,” he said. “It appears the rules are changing. When Dianna was brought in she was a standard issue of perfect. This new princess in the family, it is recognition of modern culture changing a little bit.”
As the culture changes -- the level of fascination -- remains the same.
