BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Sabres have hired Phil Housley to be their next head coach.

Housley, a native of South St. Paul, is a Hall of Fame defenseman who was selected by Buffalo in the first round of the 1982 draft. Housley also played for the Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs.

He has worked as an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators and replaces Dan Bylsma, who was fired with general manager Tim Murray in April.
