EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings ushered in a new era of offense Friday, officially announcing they have hired Eagles' quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their new Offensive Coordinator.

DeFillipo takes over for Pat Shurmur, who left for a head coaching job with the New York Giants. He spent two seasons (2016-17) as the Eagles quarterbacks coach after spending the previous season as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

“We are very excited to add John to our staff. We took our time with the search and made sure we left no stone unturned to get the right fit," said Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer in a released statement. . "He has a track record of success and has proven to be a great teacher. We feel John will have good chemistry with our team and we are all eager to get to work.”

Current Vikings running back Latavius Murray was with Oakland in 2013-14 when DeFilippo was quarterbacks coach with the Raiders. "I remember his energy was great. Positive, very positive, liked to have fun. He was passionate," Murray recalls. "I knew Derek (Carr) liked him, that’s for sure. I know everybody liked Flip. I’ve never heard anything bad about him or anybody who felt different, to be honest with you.”

DeFilippo is credited with helping develop second-year quarterback Carson Wentz into one of the NFL's top young stars. As a rookie Wentz posted Eagles franchise rookie records in pass attempts, passing yards, passing touchdowns and completion percentage. Wentz’s 3,782 passing yards marked the fourth-highest total in single-season team history and NFL rookie history.

The new OC was a quarterback himself, winning four letters at James Madison.

Current Vikings quarterback coach Kevin Stefanski was also reportedly in the mix for the Vikings offensive coordinator vacancy. He may still be looking for the same position, now, possibly, with the Giants.
