WATCH: KARE 11's Zach Lashway catches up with Akuoma's parents

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea - Nigeria made its Winter Olympics debut in PyeongChang with the first bobsled team to ever come from Africa.

On that team is 25-year-old Minnesota native Akuoma Omeoga.

She and her teammates started their unlikely Olympic journey in a Houston garage with a makeshift wooden sled.

Sounds a little like déjà vu from 30 years ago, when Jamaica sent their first-ever bobsled team to the Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada.

KARE 11's Zach Lashway spoke with Angelina and Ikwuagwu Omeoga, Akuoma’s parents.
