SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Traffic backed up for miles on heavily-traveled Highway 169 in the south metro Thursday afternoon after a motorist apparently struck a State Trooper's squad car.

The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. in the northbound lanes of 169 near the junction with Highways 13/21. State Patrol spokesperson Tiffani Nielson says the trooper involved was working a traffic stop on the right shoulder of the highway when a motorist attempted a U-turn in the traffic lanes.

That driver was struck broadside by another vehicle, then careened into the trooper's cruiser.

The multi-vehicle crash closed down the heavily traveled northbound lanes of 169 in Shakopee, backing traffic up for miles.

Nielson tweeted that the trooper was not injured in the crash, but the driver of the other car was.

The highway was reopened at about 3:20 p.m.
