EAST BETHEL, Minn. - A homeowner who just finished a major addition and remodeling project has a bunch more work to do, after lightning triggered a fire at his house in East Bethel Monday.

Brendon Paulson says there was just one cloud in the sky when a bolt of lightning loudly struck a tree in the backyard around 11 a.m. Just a few minutes later he heard a loud explosion, and the house became enveloped in flames. It appears that the charge from the strike on the tree then traveled underground along a gas line, triggering an explosion and fire at the gas meter.

Paulson and his son were the only ones home at the time of the lightning strike. His son was actually playing outside in the driveway when it happened.

Damage to the structure is described as significant.
