What a weekend: Fun things to check out in the Twin Cities

Updated: 7 months ago

Minneapolis -- What a great weekend. Although we had planned just one activity, our days turned out to be filled with fun.

Here's what we took in beginning on Friday, February 5, 2009:

Chanhassen Dinner Theatre's brand spanking new production of the 80s classic Footloose is terrific. For some it will be a stroll down memory lane and for everyone it has wow for now. Great flashback songs from the movie include Footloose, Almost Paradise and Let's Hear It For The Boys. And those tunes meld perfectly with new songs made for the stage. Thanks to the energy and talents of the lead actors, the musical makes a connection with everyone in the audience. This is easily one of those times where the oft beaten cliché, "something for everyone" truly does apply. Teenagers will love this show as much as grandma. Go see it. You won't be disappointed. It even got my two left feet moving to the beat!

We also checked out designer Tom Fords first foray into film making. His new movie, The Single Guy, showcases the extraordinary talents of Colin Firth who plays George, a man grieving over the tragic and sudden death of his partner. Evert brings to this character the charming self consciousness of Pride and Prejudice Mr. Darcy, a role he made iconic. But there are few light moments and this is hardly a lark. While rich in scene setting texture and some well written dialogue, this is a serious movie that most would consider dark. It is also thought provoking which I kind of enjoy in movies from time to time.

Really like the new Kerasotes Showplace Icon Theatres at West End in St. Louis Park. If you feel like splurging with an extra few bucks, the VIP seating upstairs is wonderful for date night. There's also a bar and restaurant for anyone 21 and over.

Following the flick, we headed over for a bite at Good Day Café in nearby St. Louis Park. While limited on atmosphere the food is terrific and reasonably priced. Happily, the restaurant which frequently results in waits for breakfast and lunch is now open for dinner.

Capping this weekend's excursions, we headed over to Como Conservatory in St. Paul. The Winter Flower show recently opened and proved to be just the right antidote for my cabin fever. Strolling through the sunken garden, the aroma of lilies and other fragrant plants is a feast for the senses. This is my all time favorite Twin Cities ticket to paradise. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Great for singles and families.
