Tom Koshiol has turned his passion for nature into an opportunity for young people. Nine years ago, Tom asked Paynesville city leaders for permission to create a system of trails along the Crow River. The Crow River Trail Guards was born.

On Saturday mornings in the spring, summer and fall, you'll find Tom working with young people to develop and maintain the trails. He has just three rules: 1.) No smoking; 2.) No swearing; and 3.) No one has to work, but if you don't, you don't get pizza.

"If they just sit beside the river and do nothing, that's fine with me. At least they're away from the video games and TV sets."

Tom has also set up a point-earning program to be redeemed for Outdoor Adventure Rewards, for places like the Boundary Waters or white water rafting.

In the winter, Tom turns his energy to "My Room," a program that fixes up rooms for young people who need direction and guidance.

His abiding goal is to teach love of nature and respect for others.

Tom has designated $1100 to Crow River Trail Guards.
