Across the country, many people are celebrating National Coming Out Day by sharing their stories on social media.
The 28th annual National Coming Out Day marks an opportunity to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people who have taken the brave step to come out, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
“Coming out, whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or allied, STILL MATTERS,” The Human Rights Campaign said in a statement. "When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other.”
On Twitter, many used the hashtag #NationalComingOutDay to share their stories and offer encouragement for others who haven’t come out.
