GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- As the hectic school year sets in, it's easy for families to go for easy junk food to curb kids' robust appetites. But childcare expert Laura Davis has some ideas and tips for healthy "power snacks" that can keep kids energized all day.
Davis recommends that parents work with kids and plan snacks ahead. She also suggests families designate a spot in the refrigerator so kids can grab their own snacks.
As for recipes, Davis offers these ideas:
- Mason Jar Snack – putting a snack in a different container makes it more fun for kids.
- White chocolate Raspberry bites – put white chocolate chips inside raspberries for a sweet bite.
- “To go” peanut butter or hummus – use small plastic containers with lids to pack a vegetables and dip. You can keep these in your car for a quick snack while you’re on the road.
- Butterfly cheese and crackers - fill one side of a sandwich bag with crackers and the other side with cheese. Decorate a clothes pin with googly eyes and pipe cleaners for antennas. Clip it in the center to make a butterfly.
- Low carb cucumbers and cheese – stack cucumbers and cheese for a lean, low carb snack.
- Frozen yogurt covered blueberries – dip blueberries in yogurt and freeze them overnight.
