Pets and renting: How to put their best paw forward

Pet-friendly rentals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minneapolis is among the most pet-friendly cities in the nation!  A recent survey gave us an “A-” grade for the ease of owning a pet and the number of pet-friendly rentals in the Twin Cities.

While more landlords are rolling out the welcome mat for Fluffy and Fido, local real estate and rental professional Kevin Ortner from Renters Warehouse says there are some things renters with pets can do to ensure Fido and Fluffy are also terrific tenants.

Ortner says it’s a good idea to help your pet put his or her best ‘paw’ forward by providing letters of recommendation from past landlords detailing how responsible your pet is. He also suggests providing your landlord with a pet resume, which should include details about any training classes your pet has taken, as well as a list of the vaccinations your pet has had.

If your travel or work schedule keeps you away from home longer than you’d like, Ortner recommends hiring someone to either dog-sit or cat-sit for you, so that your pet may be less prone to barking or scratching all day while you’re away. He also advises renters with pets to make sure their four-legged family members aren’t bringing in any extra residents such as fleas and ticks.

Ortner says that the best rule of thumb for renters with pets is to always be honest, whether it’s about the number of pets you may have or any damage those pets cause. By doing so, Ortner says renters can avoid any drama – and extra clean-up costs – down the road.
