GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn -- This month, we shine the spotlight on the Greater Twin Cities United Way, and their work to educate the public about high poverty level in the Twin Cities region. Greater Twin Cities United Way mission is to build pathways out of poverty.
Andy Goldman-Gray, senior vice president, Workplace Markets, Greater Twin Cities United Way spoke about the third annual United Way Action Day - August 14th.
There is something for everyone - from kids to adults. By giving just 15 minutes of their time - one can make a big difference. An example of what can be done in just 15 minutes: you can help make dental kits for 15 children and women who are pregnant. Or working with our Caring Connection team - which matches the community with volunteer opportunities - there are three ways to get involved on August 14th:
• School supply drive at Mall of America in the East Court:
o Through this drive, we're aiming to collect much-needed school supply items to make a difference in a child's life by giving them a great start to the school year. The public can either drop off actual school items at Mall of America or donate online.
• Lunchtime speed volunteering between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in either downtown Minneapolis or downtown St. Paul:
o Whether one has 15 minutes or an hour - head over to the U.S. Bank Plaza or if in St. Paul, stop over to Ecolab Plaza and join hundreds of speed volunteers. They can assemble dental supplies, laundry or education kits; healthy snack packs, or warm bed packs.
• And from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. - a LIVE UNITED Celebration & Team Challenge at Mall of America, Rotunda
o Grab your friends, co-workers, family or neighbors to join us for speed volunteering and special team challenge races. As you can see, this event was such a success last year. Kids to adults took part in the speed volunteering. We're hoping for an even bigger event this year. Every half-hour - a new race and a chance to compete - all for the good of the community! Lots of fun for everyone.
