GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- It's National Water Safety Month, and with people heading toward the water this summer, a refresher on an safety is important.
Tyler Green, head of Life Time Fitness Aquatics in Plymouth, shared these tips on KARE 11 Saturday:
- 25/10 rule: Parent/guardian must remain within 10 feet of any child who cannot swim 25 meters continuously and unassisted
- Enroll kids in swimming lessons: It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children to start swimming lessons before age 4. Make sure the lessons are taught by certified instructors and has a low student to teacher ratio (6 students or less per instructor).
- Throw, don't tow: Kids (or adults) should never try to help a friend by grabbing them or holding them. The person in distress may pull the helper into the water. Instead, throw a floating device and make sure to alert an adult or call for help.
