GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – A local bakery that employs urban teens and teaches them job readiness and life skills is expanding. Cookie Cart just bought a building in St. Paul.
Executive director Matt Haley and a few Cookie Cart employees stopped by KARE 11 Saturday with details.
Cookie Cart is expanding its program to Saint Paul and has purchased a building at 946 Payne Avenue on the city's East Side.
The organization hopes to open the bakery sometime in 2017 but it will start a pilot program for Saint Paul teens in January 2016 in partnership with Johnson High School. The teens in the initial program will receive classroom learning focused on job readiness and life skills, like youth in Cookie Cart's Minneapolis program, and will have the opportunity to participate in Saint Paul area community cookie selling events as a representative of the organization.
