Talking with kids about the Waseca bomb plot

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - An elaborate plan to bomb Waseca Junior and Senior High Schools was averted when a 17-year-old boy was arrested last week.

Although there is enormous relief, the small community is still reeling from the horror of what could have happened.

If there are children or teens in your family it's important to pay close attention to how this news affects them, and to do what you can to help them feel as safe and secure as possible. Today Developmental Psychologist Marti Erickson, M.D., host of Moms Enough appeared on Kare 11 News at 11 to offer parents some important tips .

  • Limit children's exposure to the TV coverage
  • Create opportunities for your children to talk about what they are feeling
  • Reassure your children of the specific things you and other adults are doing to keep them safe
  • Focus on acts of heroism – in this case, what prevented this plot from being carried out.
