MINNEAPOLIS - Fort Snelling National Cemetery is a breathtaking place any season of the year. When you visit the historic site during the holidays it's usually covered with a blanket of snow and a blanket of fresh green wreaths.
Wreaths Across America is a grass roots organization that is almost 20 years old and has had a ground swell of growth in the last five years. Their mission is to remember, honor, and teach.
The mission is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on the second Saturday of December at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Ceremonies will also take place at veterans' cemeteries in all 50 states and beyond. This includes Fort Snelling.
In 2010, Wreaths Across America laid over 220,000 memorial wreaths at 545 locations in the United States.
You can help by donating at a participating business or on the website. Linder's Garden Center is a sponsor this year.
The event happens at 11 a.m. on December 10th at Fort Snelling. They hope to lay 2000 wreaths that morning.
Thanks to Richard Geis from the Civil Air Patrol for helping us learn about this wonderful program.
