BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Jackie and Tim Overom invited Bobby and I down to their home in Burnsville to see their gardens. They lived in the home for more than 30 years and the gardens have been a labor of love throughout those three decades. The results are amazing, the backyard that used to house a pool now is a great example of how you can create separate and unique "outdoor rooms."
The backyard has no less than a dozen sitting areas that are made up of mainly vintage Russell Woodard iron furniture from the 1960's that has been refurbished. There have two fabulous areas for their four grandchildren to play. Playhouses, fairy gardens, sand boxes, garden art and unique plants adorn this wonderful place. A babbling brook in the front surrounded by beautiful trees and shade gardens, and water features in the back add to the ambiance of this yard.
Eleven years ago Jackie was diagnosed with breast cancer, that summer not too much gardening was done, but Tim took over and stepped away from his love of bass fishing to keep the gardens looking good for his wife. Two years prior to that Jackie's good friend Liz Maki was diagnosed with breast cancer as well. They decided to throw a garden party together to raise funds for the Piper Breast Center where they were treated. For the last eight years, they have picked a night in July and used this special garden for this great cause. Sadly Jackie's friend Liz died in 2007, so the party goes on in her honor.
Jackie wanted to show her yard to us to hopefully inspire others to use their yards and gardens to help out causes close to their hearts.
Thank you to Jackie and Tim for having us and we hope their event is a huge success!
Belinda and Bobby
